You CAN do something to reduce plastic waste
Need a reason to reduce the plastic in your life? Here are a few. Plastic packaging is a climate change problem because plastics are made of fossil fuels and are highly carbon intensive to manufacture. They are also a health hazard as highly toxic pollutants are emitted when plastics are manufactured (and we do not yet know the health effects of the microplastics that are showing up in placenta and our blood streams). And, of course, plastic waste pollutes the oceans and other ecosystems.
Plastics are everywhere and hard to avoid. But there are ways communities can cut down on plastics. DC Reduces is one way to achieve this goal.
DC Reduces is a grassroots initiative started by local residents to reduce single-use plastic and packaging waste in the community. The green and white sticker in the window indicates that the shop is happy to have customers bring in their own bags or other containers.
How it Works
The idea is simple. Businesses that accept BYO containers put our sticker in their window, letting their customers know they can shop with their own containers, hassle-free. We also list the businesses here.
